Chelsea to face Atletico Madrid in Romania not Spain after UEFA confirm switch

Chelsea have an extremely tough Champions League draw in the second round, with La Liga-topping Atletico Madrid the opponent we got out of the hat this time.

Diego Simeone’s team look very strong, but the Blues have just been handed a bit of a boost by UEFA.

The Blues will now be playing their away leg not at the Wanda Metropolitano, but at the Arena Nationala in Bucherest, Romania.

It’s all because of the coronavirus situation – ironically, the dire Covid rates in the UK have meant that Spain aren’t happy to receive a planeful of players; wheras the UK really haven’t got much to lose by letting Los Colchoneros fly in.

The game is still on the same date in two weeks (23rd February), and the return leg at the Bridge will still be on the 17th March.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the game – but as it stands it still looks like a tough test against perhaps the most in-form team in Europe in 2021 so far.
