A group of daring Ghanaian adventurers, known as the Wanderlust Ghana Expedition Club (WGEC), in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has officially launched an ambitious 30,000-kilometre overland expedition spanning Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The journey, which aims to promote Ghana’s rich culture and showcase the country as a top-tier tourism destination, is set to kick off on September 30, 2024.

The expedition, launched at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, will see six members of the Wanderlust Ghana team embark on the epic three-month journey. The adventurers—Kwabena Peprah, Franklin Peters, Kojo N. Richard Osei-Anim, Kwadwo Saka Addo-Mensah, and Kwame Peprah—will drive through 30 countries in three vehicles, stopping at strategic locations to highlight Ghana’s diverse heritage.

Countries along the route include Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Spain, Germany, and South Africa, among others. The expedition will also feature visits to Ghanaian embassies in various regions, where the team will be joined by representatives of the Ghana Tourism Authority to showcase elements of Ghanaian culture such as food, music, and fashion.

Speaking on the motivation behind the expedition, team leader Kwabena Peprah stated that the primary goal is to position Ghana as an attractive tourist destination. “Tourism in Ghana is the project; nothing else. We are pushing tourists into the country for the ‘December in GH’ initiative by the Ghana Tourism Authority. The world is vast, and we want to explore it while also promoting Ghana,” he noted.

The adventurers are no strangers to bold undertakings. Last year, the team embarked on a 10,000-kilometre journey from Accra to London, raising funds for Eduspot, a charity that supports underserved communities. This year’s expedition is supported by notable sponsors, including Pebble, GB Foods, and Imperial Homes Limited, among others. Pebble, a streaming platform, will provide live coverage of the journey, allowing global viewers to follow the team’s progress in real time.

Akwasi Agyeman, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, lauded the Wanderlust Ghana team for their dedication to promoting Ghana. “This journey will showcase our soft power, our culture, and our heritage, and help drive up tourist numbers. Our job is to market and promote Ghana as a tourist destination, and this expedition offers a unique platform to do just that,” he remarked during the launch.

While acknowledging the potential challenges, such as mechanical issues or health concerns, the team remains optimistic and prepared for whatever the road may bring. “We plan for the worst and work hard to overcome any setbacks. If a car breaks down, we’ll simply ship it back to Ghana. The journey is an adventure, and we’re fully ready,” Peprah said confidently.

With excitement building, the Wanderlust Ghana team is set to embark on a journey that will not only fulfill their adventurous spirit but also contribute to putting Ghana on the global tourism map.
